Frequently Asked Questions

I've never been to church; what is the service like?
The services at St Nicholas are designed to be visitor friendly, so we regularly explain what we're doing at points during the service, and why we're doing it. You don't have to know anything before you visit, or bring anything. The services mostly contain a mixture of songs, a reading or two from the Bible and prayers, as well as a short talk on a passage from the Bible. The service also contains a confession and creed (statement of beliefs), which you are welcome to join in with as you wish. The evening service is slightly less formal as well as being smaller in terms of the number of people who come.

Do you take collections?
We don't take collections during the service. There is an opportunity to give to the work of St Nicholas and our mission partners in other countries in a box near the entrance to church, but there's no expectation that visitors will do this.

What are the arrangements for children and babies?
Children aged 3 and under can be taken to the crèche, which operates during every Sunday morning service, from 10.30am onwards. Children aged 4-14 come to the first part of the service and leave for their groups, apart from the first Sunday of the month when they are in their groups from the beginning of the service, and the fourth Sunday of the month, when they stay in church for the whole of the All-Age service. For young people in school years 10-13, the CYFA group meets at 4.30-5.45pm every Sunday in church.

How do I know the leaders are 'safe'?
We take the safeguarding of both children and adults very seriously. Every group leader has been through a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check at enhanced level and attends annual training. For more information on our Safeguarding policy, please contact our Parish Safeguarding Officer through the Church Office.

I'm not sure what I believe; do you have courses for people like me?
Yes, and we'd love to talk to you about them. Check out the 'New to Christianity' page.

Do you run the Alpha course?
No, but we run a similar course for those thinking through the claims of Christianity, called 'Christianity Explored'. Have a look at the 'New to Christianity' page for more details.

What do you believe?
Take a look at the 'Welcome' page to find out what we believe at St Nicholas.

How do I contact the Rector?
You can contact CJ Davis, the Rector, on 020 8672 7691 or email him via the form on the 'Contact us' page. You could also come along to church one Sunday, and chat to him then. His day off is usually Saturday.

How do I know who to contact at church about various things?
The best way to do this is to ring the Church Office or fill in the form on the 'Contact us' page; we can then let you know who the best person is to talk to.

How do I find out about having my child baptized or confirmed?
We would love to talk to you about this; please come along to church one Sunday and talk to CJ, the Rector, about services of baptism, dedication or confirmation.

How do I find out about getting married or having my Banns read at St Nicholas?
Please see the 'Weddings' page or ring the Church Office.

What happens at St Nicholas during the week?
